Our history

John was an active member of the West Point Society of Atlanta (WPSA) for more than 25 years. He created the original job networking group in the early 1990's and the WPSA monthly luncheon program. He was one of the driving forces behind establishing the WPCEA in 2003. He served as the Executive Director of the Atlanta Enterprise Center assisting the homeless and jobless to find a new and successful lives. After a long battle with gastric cancer, John passed away on 29 September 2011.

In 2011, WPSA renamed the foundation in John's honor to reflect a lifetime of spent improving the community. An Airborne Ranger, Central Intelligence Agency agent, and past President of the Society, John dedicated himself to empowering veterans to rebuild their lives including championing a $250,000 grant for temporary housing.

In accordance with John’s motto  “to serve my fellow human,” the Foundation now works tirelessly to fulfill that wish.

The mission of the Center for Leadership and Diversity in STEM is to increase the recruitment and retention of African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, females, and other under-resourced populations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

This mission is aligned with the national need to increase the number of STEM experts, for a shortage of talent threatens the country’s ability to drive innovation, compete internationally, and protect national security.

This national need coincides with a need from within the United States Army for officers with a higher level of scientific and technological literacy who can effectively lead in an increasingly complex operational environment.
